Image Analysis: The Ferry

As you know from my previous post, currently i am very interested in “The Beauty in the Mundane”, which is a theme which presents pictures of things that may seem dull or boring, yet have their own charm and beauty, despite being simple or ordinary.

This image taken on a ferry in Scotland is a good example. On the one hand, this isn’t an “epic” picture in any way, in fact it is quite ordinary. However, it has a decent composition with good angles, the colour balance feels nice and there is more to it than initially meets the eye. The hills in the background, the calm sea, the isolation of no one else being there. For me it holds memories of my island hopping trips, and a very nice summer holiday break. It is a very peaceful and comfortable picture to me.

A few years ago i would never have taken this picture (or taken but never posted). It isn’t a grand landscape, there are no people in it, there isn’t even a defined subject other than the ferry itself (and possibly the chairs or the view from the windows), yet despite those issues, the picture works, and has value.

The editing on this was simple, all of it done in the calibration tab in Lightroom, with a little extra adjustment to the white balance and tint.

Hopefully you can agree, and whether you like it or not, can see that there was a reason to take it.
