Topaz Gigapixel: An Update

A 600px image up-scaled in gigapixel.

Following on from my previous review, i was surprised to see in my email one day, an offer from Topaz to try out Gigapixel again with a 40% discount for life.

This was a really good offer, especially since they also advertised improvements to their main upscalers.

I am pleased to say that things have certainly improved over the last few months.

Without meandering around too much, i’ll just get to the point. The new “Wonder 3” model is fantastic.

I threw everything at it, including a lot of ultra low res jpg’s, some only 600×450 pixels. A few of the pictures i fed into it were ones that i had tried before in multiple upscalers and always had terrible results.

Wonder 3 performed magic basically. I don’t think i had a bad output from the 50 or so files i tried out. I was genuinely shocked at how well it did with some of them.

I left it on the medium setting mostly, the high setting seems to add bit more sharpening, but both were good, i just tended to prefer the less sharpened look of the medium setting.

It isn’t 100% perfect of course, there are still a few minor areas where it can trip up, tattoos for example, or fuzzy text in the original image that gets a decent guess but not quite here. Irrespective of that, it’s now an excellent and properly usable tool, and with the 40% discount it feels like the price is spot on too.

9 out of 10.

That’s about as high praise as i can give it. Honestly if you have been holding off, now is the time. Gigapixel is the market leader by far now and what was a decent but average product, is now outstanding.
